Recently I made it so the only person who could read my blog was me.
Don't take it personally.
I got lots of emails and messages wondering if it was you. It's not.
But here's the thing- blogging does weird things. Wonderful and weird things.
It's nice because you feel like you know people you've never met, like you do the characters in a well written book. You get a window into the lives of far away family and friends who you otherwise would remain unconnected to. You learn new insights and get fresh perspectives and ideas because it can be such a personal and intimate look into someones life as they detail their day to day journey. You relate to people in a similar stage of life as yourself and you can forge friendships of support through blogging comments alone.
And conversely, it can be hard to say what you really feel when you know it will be read and judged by people who may or may not be able or willing to understand your perspective, as a trusted friend would. You don't want to hurt any feelings or leave anyone out when documenting events.
Often times I will go to share something with someone and they give me the "I already read it on your blog" look.
I do this thing where I'm always wondering how everything affects other people, how will this particular person interpret this situation or post. Which I think is a beneficial filter to have going when what you write is a public forum.
But first and foremost, the blog has become my place to document my life. It is my journal and my scrapbook and my family history. So I have a need to be authentic, above anything else. I don't want to feel pressure to say things that I think will be well received, I want to say things as they really are. Sometimes I'm unmotivated, and uninspired, and I haven't done laundry that week and I ate chocolate cake for breakfast. And lunch. And then sometimes I study my scriptures everyday and keep a stellar scripture journal and make fresh salsa and scrub the baseboards and write my congressman, all before 9am. And I want to know what makes the difference. So I want to write about it. And for other people to be scrutinizing that learning process is a bit more than I'm comfortable with.
Am I the only one that finds the process crazy?...
-Spill your guts out there in cyberspace
-Wait for the comments to roll in over the next few days to see how you feel about how you felt
-Check sitemeter to see who's reading but not commenting.
That's actually not how I experience it, I'm not a sitemeter checker at all actually but I know that's how it goes for plenty of people. What a weird thing we're involved in here.
I am sort of a private person and this whole scene has always been a struggle for me.
Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned in the sense that communication is so much more rewarding when there is reciprocation. I too am insanely guilty of reading peoples thoughts and feelings without leaving them feedback of any kind. Almost without exception, if I am on the computer, I am breastfeeding so if I can't do it with one click, it's not gonna happen. But all of a sudden I found that I don't talk to people anymore because everybody feels like they know what's going on with me because they read my blog. Which is a little bit okay because we're all busy yelling at our kids. To come down for lunch. Not really yelling at our kids. (Yikes, who yells at their kids anymore? Now we just tell them they can't have their iphone with them at preschool that week). But I do miss the actual exchange of live relationships.
And that's why I closed down the bliggity blog. I told you it wasn't personal. It's all about my own weirdish worries. But after receiving numerous messages thinking it was, and late night phone calls from the very rudest and belligerent of readers, I decided I would re-open it.
But only under one condition. And that one condition has sub categories.
1) Promise to never be offended by anything I write.
2) If you do get offended, just promise not to write anything nasty about me on my locker or tell everyone that I peed the bed until I was 9 (authenticity people).
3) Try not to be a silent stalker. And I'll try not to do that either. Stalkers are for celebrities, and let's not kid ourselves, my life is just not that cool.
4) And lastly, try not to judge me in my extreme absurdity. Pretty much my entire goal for life is to continue down the path of becoming less and less of an idiot. So if you can help me do that somehow that would be great.

if i wasn't holding a baby and pecking with one finger i would type you a love letter. a love love love letter.
So glad to read your blog again! I love your stories and love seeing your adorable family!
Hey Julie!
This is my first visit in a long while to your blog! :) I agree with you wholeheartedly about blogging. It is a weird feeling sometimes to not know exactly who is out there reading about your life. And for me, it was especially weird to know that people follow my blog and never comment. Ever. I had a few stalkers like that on our family blog and I ended up shutting it down. Identity is so valuable and it is easy to give away a lot of that in blogging.
Also, like you were saying, it scares me that social interaction is almost all via electronic devices. While it is way awesome to be able to Skype with family and friends who do not live close by, email others, and get in touch with people who you haven't seen since high school, it also scares me. I don't want my kids growing up thinking that the only way you make friends is via the internet.
I think it is really cool, though, that you are documenting this part of your family's life! It will be so great for your girls to read funny phrases that they said, see pictures of experiences they had and see how exactly you dealt with them as a parent! That is amazing!
Blogging is an individual decision for sure. And I think anyone who judges you for what you put up on your blog is crazy! :) I'm glad you blog for friends from afar to see! I miss you guys so much! Love you!!
Hey Gulia, I am glad you re-opened your blog but I would not be mad at you or disown you as a sister in law if you took it down again. I would just miss the funny stories and pictures of your girls that are growing like weeds. I understand your desire for authenticity and straight-forwardness in your blog. I am sorry that you received angry phone calls. You didn't deserve that at all and that person probably shouldn't have access anyway! Just know that I love you and "support any decision you choose" in regards to your blog.
I love you so much! I am glad I got to see Brady! Hope you are doing well while he is OR.
Love you sis.

Furthermore!... I will cyberstalk if I darn well please. I already have to sign in to read your blog and critique your photographs so I don't want to write what I am about to call and tell you.
You already control who can read your blog so quit crying about the mysterious stalkers... they're called your friends and family. Remember you had to type in their names and email addresses? We all read it! We wouldn't bother going through the hoopla to get our names and email addresses on the list and sign in if we were not going to read it.
(The above portion is from the very rudest and most belligerent of readers who will, in fact, call you at all hours of the day and night if you try to pull that stunt again.)
(The below portion is from your favorite brother who is so kind and loving, and the biggest fan of your blog!)
That being said, I understand that you have a desire to get some feedback on your blogs.
You are hilarious and a fantastic writer, not to mention that you are doing a fabulous job of raising a beautiful family. I will try to be better at leaving feedback.
Thanks for putting the blog back up! I love reading about all things going on in the Reynolds home.
Goatface
I'm offended and so from now on I will only silently stalk your blog, but don't be offended by that. Haha, I'm totally kidding.
Don't worry so much...the people that are reading your blog are friends and family and if they know you at all, then they would know you would never try to offend someone or hurt their feelings.
You're awesome, I love your girls even though I got them sick, and I'm jealous you're going to Hill without us (can't believe you'd leave me here in P-town). Thanks for letting me read the blog again :) I'm sure I'll see you soon.
"like"-except sometimes we(me) cyberstalk cause "we" feel like commenting is intruding and comments from the peanut gallery sometimes don't matter very much.
It's all been said. I especially echo the comments that mention what a fantastic writer you are and how much I love you.
I do however miss talking to you and agree that we should make an attempt at reciprocation. It's probably easier to talk and hold a baby (and who says I don't yell at my kids?) than it is to peck type with one hand.
I love you Julie, and I love your blog and your children and the funny and sad stories you write! I'm often laughing out loud when on your blog which makes my husband look at me funny. And then I start to cry on a post further down which makes him look at me even funnier. Oh ya, it's awesome. But I love it!
This cyber world we are in is quite strange, and can often make us disconnect because we're so connected, but this is a case where I am so happy for that connection, because we all get to stay in contact 10 years after going our separate ways.
So glad you are back! I felt like an idiot for truly being sad that I would no longer be able to read your blog. You are hilarious, an amazing writer, inspiring, awesome and most of all, very real. I so look forward to your entries. I've cried, laughed (a lot), and been reminded often that there are others out there going through the same things; some in different ways and some very much the same. Keep doing what you are doing and I will enjoy being a part of that for as long as I'm allowed! I love it here!!!
I sometimes feel the same way Julie, which is why I haven't updated ours in a while. But, I plan too soon! I love your thoughts and how honest you are about motherhood and life. It's refreshing to hear rare honesty these days and I LOVE it! I've been in a writing letters/phone calls/emails things rather than posting on the blog. I might be ready soon to venture into blogging again :-)
Julie, I love reading your blog and seeing and reading about your beautiful family. Without your authenic, humorous, and entertaining blog and pictures I wouldn't be able to see your little girls grow up and I am so appreciative of being able to do that because you live there and I live here and our paths are not able to cross very often but I still love you and your beautiful family! You are one amazing person and a terrific beautiful Mother!
